Terms of Service

These terms are an agreement between you and House of Holder LLC (“Secret Scribe,” “we,” “us”) covering the Secret Scribe app and website. By creating an account or joining the waitlist you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use Secret Scribe.

1. Who can use Secret Scribe

Accounts may be created only by adults who are the parent or legal guardian of the child they enroll. You are responsible for everything done in your account. Children ages 5 to 17 may participate only through a parent's account. Children under 13 participate only with the parent operating the app on their behalf. Secret Scribe is currently available in the United States only.

2. Consent

Before adding a child you must confirm that you are their parent or legal guardian and consent to the collection and use of their information as described in our Privacy Policy. We record that consent. You may withdraw it at any time by closing the account, which ends your child's participation.

3. How the service works

We match your child with another enrolled child in the same age band, provide writing prompts and a game, screen letters, and print and mail them through a third-party partner. Pen names are assigned by us and cannot be chosen or changed by families. We may reassign a pen name at our discretion. Matches are made by our team; we do not guarantee a match within any particular time.

4. Letters and screening

Every letter is screened before it is printed. We may decline to send a letter, return it to you with a note, or end a match if we believe a letter contains personal information, unkind or inappropriate content, or anything that puts a child at risk. These decisions are ours to make and are final. You agree that your child will not include in a letter their last name, address, phone number, school, social media handles, photographs, or anything meant to identify or locate them, and will not ask the other child for such information.

5. Mail

Letters are printed and mailed by a third-party partner and delivered by the postal service. Mail can be delayed, damaged, or lost. We will do our best to help, including reprinting a lost letter where we can, but we are not responsible for postal delays or losses.

6. Your responsibilities

Keep your account credentials private. Provide an accurate mailing address and keep it current. Supervise your child's use of the app as appropriate for their age. Report anything that concerns you using the Family tab. Do not use Secret Scribe to contact a child for any purpose other than the pen-pal season, and do not attempt to identify or locate another family outside the reveal.

7. Fees

Participation in the Founding Scribes cohort is free. Future seasons may require payment, and any price will be shown clearly before you are asked to pay. Purchases made through the App Store are subject to Apple's terms.

8. Ending participation

You may end a match, pause your child, or close the account at any time from the Family tab. We may suspend or close an account if these terms are broken or if we believe it is necessary to keep a child safe. Sections 4, 9, 10, and 11 survive the end of the agreement.

9. Content

Your child's letters belong to your family. You give us permission to store, transcribe, screen, print, and mail them, and to show them to the matched family, in order to run the service. We may use anonymized, aggregated information about the service (such as how many letters were exchanged) publicly. We will not publish a child's letter or name without your written permission.

10. Disclaimers and limits

Secret Scribe is provided “as is.” We work hard to keep kids safe but cannot guarantee that every letter will be free of mistakes or that the service will be available without interruption. To the fullest extent allowed by law, House of Holder LLC is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, and our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or $50 if you paid nothing.

11. Disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Utah. If we have a disagreement, please contact us first and we will try to work it out. Any dispute that cannot be resolved will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Salt Lake County, Utah.

12. Changes

We may update these terms. If a change is significant we will notify you in the app or by email before it takes effect. Continuing to use Secret Scribe after that means you accept the change.
